According to Wikipedia, “Girls is an American television series that premiered on HBO on April 15, 2012. Created by and starring Lena Dunham, Girls is a comedy-drama following a close group of twenty-somethings living in New York City. The show’s premise and major aspects of the main character were inspired by some of 26-year-old Dunham’s real-life experiences. On January 25, 2013, HBO renewed the series for a third season, which will consist of 12 episodes.”
Girls has received many award nominations, and actually won five different awards–a Primetime Emmy Award in 2012 for outstanding casting in a comedy series (awarded to Jennifer Euston), two Golden Globe Awards in 2013 for best television series (comedy or musical) and best performance by an actress in a television series (comedy or musical, awarded to Lena Dunham), a Directors Guild of America Award for outstanding directorial achievement in a comedy series (awarded to Lena Dunham), and an Art Directors Guild Award for achievement in an episode of a half hour single-camera television series (awarded to Judy Becker).
As part of the Television and New Media course in the M.A. in Public Communications program at Fordham University, each class member is required to create their own blog reviewing an entire season of a television series. I chose “Girls” because I was curious about the show and kept seeing ads for it on the bus. So I decided to give it a shot, and I am sure glad I did!
